2005-2006 Catalog - Program and Course List for Psycholog M.A.

The Master of Arts in Psychology program is a forty-two semester hour program that is designed to train masters-level psychologists in the scientific discipline and practice of psychology. All students take a core curriculum consisting of courses which provide concentrated study in the major academic areas of psychology. In addition, students take courses in specialized areas to prepare them for the application of psychological principles. Each student is assigned a Faculty adviser whose responsibility it is to assist in developing a course of study.

Students select either a clinical or thesis track option. The primary education and training mission of the clinical track is to train students to enter the masters level practice of psychology or counseling in applied settings. In addition to course work, students receive supervised clinical experience in selected agencies toward the end of the program. Graduates of the program are prepared to take the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists examination to be certified as a licensed Psychological Associate. With additional experience graduates may elect to take the Licensed Professional Counselor or Marriage and Family Therapist examination. Many graduates will work under the supervision of a licensed psychologist for an exempt agency, or as an independent practitioner as a licensed Professional Counselor or a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist.

The purpose of the thesis track option is to provide a program with a research emphasis. In addition to course work, students will conduct an empirical masters thesis under the direction and supervision of the student's thesis adviser. The thesis option does not include supervised clinical experience and does not prepare the student for any form of clinical certification. Graduates may apply to research-oriented doctoral programs.
